Easter is my favorite holiday for gifting. I think I love it most, because it is mostly about chocolate and the expectations are not so high. There are no gift lists and things for every member of the family, teachers and throw in friends and neighbors. The lists are short and the amount of sweets is high… score!
Today I want to show you how I took a shiny new galvanized pail, aged it to a beautiful vintage aged finished it off with my favorite bunny silhouette!
How to Age Galvanized Metal
Supplies Needed:
- Galvanized Metal Pail
- Acidic Toilet Bowl Cleaner
- Steel Wool
- Rubber Gloves
Project Instructions:
Step One. Pick up a shiny new galvanized pail or tub from your local home improvement store. I wanted mine to be large so the girls can use them as trash cans under their sinks after the holiday has passed. Nothing like a little multi-tasking.
Step Two. This is the most important step! Put on a pair of thick rubber gloves. You are going to be working with acid and I simply cannot caution you any more strongly. It is acid and unless you’d like to be burned. Put on those gloves! Now the fun begins… squirt the toilet bowl cleaner on the steel wool or directly onto the pail. I like to use this brand because it is more like a gel and is easier to work with.
Step Three. Spend some time rubbing in the acidic toilet bowl cleanser with the steel wool. You’ll definitely smell when it is working! After I worked it in well, I let it sit for about 30 minutes and then rinsed it with the hose in the yard. Once it dried, I buffed it a tiny bit more with the steel wool.
Step Four. I added a bunny silhouette that I had printed on card stock to the front of the pail. The sky is the limit here, though. You can monogram, paint a name, paint a cute bunny… I chose the card stock option because we will be using these again for other things.
Now the real fun begins… sweets!
I headed to my local Walmart just like I do every year to load up on Easter candy and treats. I love rolling down the seasonal aisle and just being immersed by all of those candy smells! I was so glad to see my old favorites and a few new goodies like the new DOVE® Peanut Butter Eggs. You can find even more inspiration at MyConfectionCorner.Com.
Here is what I brought home and they are loved each and every year:
- DOVE® Milk Chocolate Bunny
- SNICKERS® Bunny Cane
- DOVE® Peanut Butter Egg
- Skittles® Bunny Cane
- Starburst® Funsize Cane
- Hubba Bubba®
I added dark green grass, a few brightly colored eggs, bunny ears and all of my treats to the bucket and now all I have to do is wait until Easter morning.
What is your favorite way to decorate an Easter basket? I’d love to hear!
