Do you want to create an instant conversation piece at your Thanksgiving table? Add words to the decor. Yep, there is something about words that sparks conversations at our table. It is almost like having already opened fortune cookies…you just gotta know what the other person’s says, right? It is all about sharing at our table. So, I had the best time making these Thanksgiving Napkin Rings…
My mom always had us eat in the dining room each Sunday. We even had to use the “fancy” napkins, not the paper ones. She was my Girl Scout leader too, and made sure I knew how to set a “proper” table.
I followed along when I was young because it was just what I expected, it was routine. Now that my own children are preteens and teens, I have realized that I am turning into my mom. We may not eat at the dining room table each Sunday, but we do use the “fancy” napkins even at the kitchen table.
I like to set the table and make it pretty, even at the eye rolls of my kids. My mom also always had an assortment of napkin rings. Wooden, brass, shaped, colored, you name it, she had it. Even painted green ceramic Christmas trees…wonder where those are now?
I just think it is that extra detail that can change the feel at the dinner table and sometimes turn a not so good day into some special family time. It can just change your perspective, to see that someone has taken a little extra effort in showing they care and want to spend time with you.
Let me share with you what you need to create these napkin rings….

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
1. Fabric of Choice { I used a bit of the same fabric I chose for my Fabric and Felt Fall Wreath }
2. Wooden Rings or Napkin Rings
3. Jute Twine
4. Burlap Leaves { These came from Hobby Lobby }
5. Wooden Tags { These came from Wal-Mart }
7. Glue Gun and Gluesticks
_______________________
STEP ONE : Cut the fabric into 1/2 inch wide strips about 24 inches long. Wrap the wooden rings and attach at the end with a bit of glue from the glue gun.
STEP TWO: Using a pencil, write a word on each wooden banner. Carefully, following directions on wood burning tool, burn the words into the wooden tags.
STEP THREE : Tie the burlap leaf and wooden tag onto the fabric covered wooden ring.
Now just use whatever napkins you have on hand. My mom always has an assortment of napkins too. I grabbed these beautiful mustard yellow grain sack striped napkins for this tablesetting. Don’t worry about those kids wiping spaghetti on them, they wash and those things just add character to your napkins.
I am so thankful for a mom who, even though I rolled my eyes, made sure I knew about setting a table and hosting my family at the dinner table. We may not make it to the dinner table together each night and we may not use the dining room as much as I would like, but I would not trade our family dinners together for anything in the world. Priceless!
I have so loved having my home decorated for fall this year. You can see all my other fall decor in my Fall Home Tour.
Enjoy!
