Did your mama make your Halloween costumes when you were little? I have been making my own since I was a tiny thing and I am so glad that I have been able to do so for my girls! Today, I am going to show you how to make a simple and elegant Handmade Greek Goddess Costume!
Ann and I saw so many great costumes on Pinterest this year… it was so tough to pick out what she was going to be. She finally decided that she wanted to be a greek goddess. I knew that we could do this in an easy way and off we went to the fabric store! We picked up a yard of stretchy white polyester fabric. It almost felt like a thin bathing suit material. After looking at yards and yards of gold trim, we decided upon this gold sequined elastic. Finally, we headed to the craft section to pick up some gold leaves for the head piece. I already had a thin plastic headband at home to use as the base. We were ready to get sewing! Don’t get scared off… it was so easy to make!!!
First, you need to measure how long you want the dress to be. I decided to fold the fabric over so we’d have two layers for a more modest look. For the width, I just draped it around my daughter and added a few inches before I cut. Once you have the fabric cut, fold it lengthwise and pin it together. Sew one line down the entire length. You will have one big tube at this point.
Now for the draping part! Have your child put on the tube inside out. Your seam should be showing now. Pull the fabric up in the front and up in the back on the opposite side of where you want the draping to be and pin. Take off the dress and sew where you pinned. At this point I trimmed a little under the arm pit so it would be more comfortable. I didn’t have to hem it at all because the fabric will drape and tuck under right where you want it to be.
I cut a length of the sequined elastic to make a belt. I just sewed it together and she wore it over the dress. I also added a little elastic at the top with a hot glue gun for a little more pizzazz.
For the greek goddess headpiece, I had picked up these Martha Stewart Crafts Decorative Leaf Stickers
I removed the sticky back from the leaves and hot glued them to the headband. For the arm cuff, I glued a small length of the elastic together and then added the leaves. Make sure you leave a little space when you glue the leaves so the cuff will stretch for putting it on and off. That’s it!
Bonnie is probably having flashbacks right now of making my gold sequined prom dress. She says sequins still pop out of her machine some times! Ha!
