It is time for another fun Summer project tutorial as part of our One Crafty Summer series. Today the so so sweet Jenny from The NY Melrose Family is here sharing her scratch and sniff painting. Let check it out!
Over at The NY Melrose Family, we try to stay as busy as possible over the summer. As a teacher mama, my girls {4.5 and 15 months} relish our Summers because “it’s a mama day” everyday! I try to keep my girls involved in our recipes as well as with our crafts. Riley especially loves it when we turn our attention to creating a fun activity for her. She absolutely loved creating our Scratch & Sniff Painting. Plus, it’s so easy to do that you probably have the supplies at home!
All you’ll need are assorted packets of Kool-Aid! I told you it was simple. I combined 1/2 cup of water with a packet of Kool-Aid and let Riley go to town creating her master piece.
If you have a four year old at home, you more than likely know that they LOVE to talk. Riley is no exception. She will seriously talk your ear off. She is so inquisitive and has taught me so much because I’m constantly looking on Google for the answers to her questions. Did you know that the moon is made of oxygen, silicon, magnesium, iron, calcium, aluminum, chromium, titanium and manganese? Yep, I then had to explain what each of those were. Riley pretty much thinks that the moon is made of metal. Luckily, I am not a science teacher and do not play one on television. She was mid soliloquy in the picture, but she absolutely loved creating her painting.
We let Riley’s painting dry during her nap, which has turned into quiet time because clearly this busy thing does not need to nap. The first words out of her mouth when she came downstairs was whether or not it was time to smell her painting. She used her nail scratching each of the colors and I waited hoping it had worked.
The sniff test found that it did work! Riley went through sniffing each of the colors and letting me know the flavors. She absolutely LOVED it! It’s one of those activities that she constantly asks to do now.

That’s such a cool idea. It must be funny to paint with such good smelling, but bitter tasting, stuff. I’m going to pass this on for my nieces and nephews.
